The
Houston Astros 2010 Caravan paid a visit to The Brookwood Community on
Thursday, Jan. 21. The Astros were represented by Manager Brad Mills, pitcher
Brian Moehler, former player Craig Biggio, announcer Bill Brown, and mascot
Junction Jack.
More
than 160 Brookwood citizens (adults with intellectual disabilities and other
special needs who live and work at Brookwood), along with some family members
and Brookwood staff greeted the Astros with a rousing and spirited pep rally.
The Brookwood Handbells started the events by performing the National Anthem.
During
the rally, Brown, Mills, Moehler and Biggio shared a little about themselves as
well their hopes for the upcoming season. In a skit that included the Astros
and Brookwood citizens, the team played their first game of 2010. Bill Brown
announced the 10-minute game in which the Astros won 432-1.
With
the encouragement of the cheering Brookwood citizens, the “game” included a
chance for Moehler to replay what it was like to pitch a complete game victory
over the Pirates last year. The second inning had Biggio reenacting his 3,000th
career hit.
Brookwood
Activities Coordinator Greg Glauser than noted to the Astros that the Brookwood
citizens also put up some impressive numbers every day with their jobs in the
on-campus workshops.
“We
can’t believe what it would be like Brad to throw 120 pitches in a game or to
get 3,000 hits in a career, Craig. But our citizens do know what it like to
hand make 120 cards in a day or plant 44,000 poinsettias in a week,” he said.
Following the pep rally, the caravan joined some of the citizens for lunch in one of the group homes at Brookwood. The group then toured the enterprise workshops to see firsthand the quality ceramics and other hand made products the citizens produce every day.
