and "Sweetheart Couple" Tickets are $30 for couples.

Horse Doctor Saves a Pattison Woman

How did a Horse Doctor save a Pattison Woman? Those of us that attended the Pattison Area Heritage Society meeting, Monday night (11/30/2009) heard the story, among others.

In the mid-1930s, there was an epidemic of Anthrax going thru the horses, mules, cattle and hogs. Very few survived. Mamie Wilson was helping her husband, John doctor some mules that were sick. A horse fly, deer fly or something bit her on the arm, after biting the mules. She got sick and nobody could help. It was suggested that Mr. John go to Dr. Evans in Prairie View. Dr. Evans was the veterinarian in Prairie View before Dr. Poindexter that most of us knew. Dr. Evans told Mr. John that Mamie had Anthrax and there was only one hope for her. He could get some medicine from Chicago, IL. Maybe it would arrive in time. This medicine or vaccination was sent after a phone call. Miracously it was hand carried, passed from one traveler to the next. It arrived in Pattison in time, because many of us had the priviledge of knowing Mamie.

We were able to put names on some of the people and buildings on the 1940s 16mm B&W film of Pattison. We won't have a meeting in December, but we already have people lined up for our meetings in the coming year. One person grew up here and was a school teacher. Looking at her gleaming eyes, you know she has some stories, or was the instigator of some stories. Come enjoy our history, the last Monday of the month, except May and December, at 7 PM at the PAVFD station.

Next Guest Night - Monday, June 29, 2009

The April 27th PAHS guest speaker evening event that was canceled/postponed because of the torrential downpour rain which occurred on that night, this June 29th Guest Night Event is going to be the "Do-Over".

Have you ever heard of Adams Flat Road? Sure, everybody has heard of it, it is north of Pattison. Do you know why it is named Adams Flat? Most roads or communities are named for families that lived there. The Adams family will be the topic of our meeting in June. The Reverend Herb Stallknecht's mother was an Adams. He has lots of pictures that will be projected onto the wall while telling stories about the family.

PAHS Thanks Caty Paben's Class for the Plant Sale Plants

Caty Paben's students from Royal High School volunteered to raise plants for the Pattison Area Heritage Society to learn the basics of running a business. That's exactly what they did.... They kept track of the expenses, germination rates, hours worked etc. and of course how much profit they could have made. Then they gave the plants to the Pattison Area Heritage Society for their annual plant and baked goods sales, which was on held on April 4, 2009. It was a very successful fundraiser and in return for their kindest, the Pattison Area Heritage Society took Caty Paben and her Royal High School students for lunch at Cici's Pizza in Katy, Texas on May 21, 2009. Each student (Caty, too) received a Certificate of Appreciation from the Pattison Area Heritage Society for their hard work and support.
